Besides using Shangdi or Shen for Elohim and Theos, the UV adopted the Chinese character Zhu, meaning master or lord, for Adonai without any dissent. English-language Bibles use all capitals “LORD” and “GOD” are used for the Tetragrammaton YHWH, and also to distinguish Adonai (Lord). Although Legge had argued against transliterating YHWH, the UV employed the Chinese character Yehehua for the Tetragrammaton, which actually transliterated the English Jehovah rather than the Hebrew YHWH. This did not raise much debate among missionaries in China. As Archie Lee, a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, points out: “The transliteration of the Hebrew proper name for God in the Tetragrammaton YHWH, as Yehehua, has largely been agreed upon without taking consideration of Hebrew piety and the practice of not pronouncing it. The name has been used by Chinese Christians without difficulties.”118

This was the situation by the time the UV was published. When Chinese people came to make their own translations of the Bible, the native translators considered reproducing the meaning of YHWH. This is apparent from comparing the different forms of address used in four Chinese versions: the UV, Today’s Chinese Version (TCV), Lü Zhenzhong’s version (LZV), and the New Chinese Version (NCV), showed as following in table:
